Career in health care

Recession or not, health care is a priority for people, say those in the field. Even before the recession, the demand supply gap where healthcare professionals was concerned was large. Again, because health insurance, a key driver of healthcare sector had made inroads, it gave affordability to people. And health insurance is poised to grow by 55 per cent.
India’s healthcare is said to be worth 41 billion dollars. In terms of beds per 1000 people, India’s figures are 0.86; while China stands at 2.2, Brazil at 2.6 and USA 3.2. These figures should sum up the general picture of healthcare in India.
To reach 2 beds per 1,000 population, India has to add 17.5 lakh beds. The investment required will be 86 billion dollars. Right now, more than four million people are employed in healthcare, say experts.
Management in healthcare is a recent phenomenon. There is a need for management talent in healthcare, both medical and non-medical healthcare professionals. Healthcare which was metro-centric is now also moving to Tier II cities. So there is a bigger need for healthcare talent too.
Apart from healthcare delivery such as jobs in hospitals and diagnostic centres, there are ancillary activities like ITrelated healthcare activities, back-end accounting of hospitals, legal process activities around healthcare which have jobs going
