COMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST (CLAT)
Admission tests for joining any of the law universities have been a regular feature, initially, with each university conducting its own test. In 2008, seven law schools - NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLIU Bhopal, NUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, HNLU Raipur and GNLU Gandhinagar - committed themselves to hold the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). In 2009, eleven law schools - with the addition of WBNUJS Kolkata, RMLNLU Lucknow(Dr.Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University),, RGNUL Patiala(Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law ), CNLU Patna(Chanakya National Law University) and NUALS Kochi to the mix - are participating in the CLAT.
The CLAT (www.clat.ac.in) is for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes (except for NLU Jodhpur) and is of two hours duration.
For undergraduate admissions: 200 marks, 200 objective questions
Subjects are English, including comprehension (40 marks), general knowledge/ current affairs (50
marks), elementary mathematics/ numerical ability (20 marks), legal aptitude (45 marks) and logical reasoning (45 marks). For postgraduate admissions:
200 marks, 50 objective questions (one mark each), 10 short-answer questions (five marks each) and two essay questions (50 marks each). Two sections contain three questions each, of which one from each section is to be answered.
Subjects are law of contracts, law of torts, family law, criminal law, constitutional law and legal theory
