Indian Statistical Institute Admission 2011


The Indian Statistical Institute, 203 B. T. Road, Kolkata-700 108, has invited applications for admission to the various Programmes of the Institute for 2011-12 offered at Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad Centres. Stipend/Fellowship as mentioned against each programme (which are likely to be revised) will be available to the deserving candidates.

The Programmes, the centres where they are offered, eligibility etc., are as follows.

(i) B.Stat. (Hons) [3-year, Kolkata]: Passed 10+2 Higher Secondary or equivalent with Mathematics and English. Stipend will be Rs. 800/- per month.

(ii)  B.Math. (Hons) [3-year, Bangalore]: Passed 10+2 Higher Secondary or equivalent with Mathematics and English. Stipend is Rs. 800/- per month.

For the B.Stat (Hons) and B.Math (Hons) Programmes, those who have successfully cleared the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad test conducted by the National Board for Higher Mathematics, Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India, need not sit for the written test. They would be directly called for interview. However, they are required to apply in the prescribed application form as per this Notification.

(iii) M.Stat. [2-year, Delhi and Chennai]: Three year Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics as full subject or a B. Stat/B. Math Degree from the Indian Statistical Institute or a Statistician’s Diploma/Senior Diploma in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute. Stipend is Rs.1200/- per month.

(iv) M.Math [2-year, Bangalore]: Three year Bachelor’s Degree or a B.E/B.Tech Degree, with Mathematics and an exceptionally strong background in Analysis and Abstract Algebra or a B.Stat/B.Math Degree from the Indian Statistical Institute. Stipend is Rs. 1200/- per month.

(v) Master of Science (M.S) in Quantitative Economics [2-year, Kolkata & Delhi]: 3-year Bachelor’s Degree in Economics / Mathematics / Statistics/ Physics or a B.Stat Degree from the Indian Statistical Institute. Engineering graduates are also eligible. Applicants should have knowledge of Economics and Mathematics at the B.A/B.Sc pass level. Stipend is Rs.1200/- per month.
(vi) Master of Science (M.S) in Library and Information Science [2-year, Bangalore]: Three year Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline securing at least 60% marks. Stipen is Rs. 1200/- per month.

(vii) M.Tech in Computer Science [2-year, Kolkata]: (i) Master's Degree in Mathematics/Statistics/ Physics/ Electronic Science/ Computer Science/Computer Applications/ Information Technology or (ii) Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Technology or any other qualification such as AMIE or GRAD-IETE or DOEACC ‘B’ Level, considered equivalent. Stipend is Rs. 5000/- per month. Candidates with a valid GATE score above a threshold (to be decided by the Selection Committee) in his/her own subject would be directly called for interview. However, such candidates are also required to apply in the prescribed application form.

(viii) M.Tech. in Quality, Reliability and Operations Research [2-year, Kolkata]: (i) Master's Degree in Statistics or Master's Degree in Mathematics with Probability and Statistics as major subjects or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent or PG diploma in SQC & OR from the Indian Statistical Institute and (ii) Knowledge of Mathematics at Graduate level and knowledge of Physics and Chemistry at Higher Secondary level. Stipend is Rs. 5000/- per month.

A candidate who was asked to discontinue any of the above programmes is not eligible for readmission to the same programme.

(ix) Junior Research Fellowship:
(a) Statistics [Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore]: (i) A good academic record with M.Stat, M.A/M.Sc or equivalent Degree in Statistics or (ii) outstanding mathematical maturity with B.Stat/B.Math, B.A/B.Sc or equivalent Degree with Statistics as the main subject.

(b) Mathematics [Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore]: (i) A good academic record with M.Stat, M.Math, M.A/M.Sc or equivalent Degree in Mathematics or (ii) outstanding mathematical maturity with B.Stat/B.Math, B.A/B.Sc or equivalent Degree with Mathematics as the main subject.

(c) Quantitative Economics [Kolkata and Delhi]: (i) A good academic record with M.S(QE), M.Stat, M.A/M.Sc or equivalent Degree in Statistics/ Mathematics /Economics/ Econometrics or (ii) outstanding mathematical maturity with B.A/B.Sc Degree with Economics as the main subject. A candidate possessing a Master's Degree in any subject with Mathematics/Statistics at B.A/B.Sc (Pass) level is also eligible.

(d) Computer Science [Kolkata and Bangalore]: A good academic record with M.E/ M.Tech or equivalent Degree in Electronics/ Telecommunication/ Radio Physics/ Computer Science/ Electrical Engineering/Microwave Communications/ Information Technology/Bioinformatics/Biotechnology with Mathematics as a compulsory subject at the graduate level or a good academic record with M.Sc/ M.C.A/ M.A or equivalent degree in Physics/ Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/Statistics/ Electronic Sciences/Computer Science/ Atmospheric Science/ Information Technology/Bioinformatics/Biotechnology with Mathematics as a compulsory subject at the graduate level. Outstanding candidates having B.E/ B.Tech or equivalent Degree in the above subjects will also be eligible.

(e) Quality, Reliability and Operations Research [Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai]: A good academic record with M. Tech/M.E/ M.S/M. Phil or equivalent Degree in Quality/Reliability/Operations Research or a good academic record with M. Stat/M. Sc/M.A or equivalent Degree in Mathematics/Statistics/Physics with Mathematics as a compulsory subject at the graduate level. Outstanding candidates having B.E/B. Tech or equivalent Degree in the above subjects will also be eligible.

(f) Biological Anthropology [Kolkata and Hyderabad]: A good academic record with Master’s Degree in Physical Anthropology / any area of Genetics (Genetics/ Human Genetics/Medical Genetics)/ Human Biology/ Biotechnology).

(g) Physics and Applied Mathematics [Kolkata]: A good academic record with M.Sc in Physics / Mathematics / Statistics.

(h) Agriculture & Ecology [Kolkata]: A good academic record with M.Sc in Agriculture / Biotechnology/ Nanoscience/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology / Botany/Zoology.

(i) Sociology [Kolkata]: A good academic record with M.A/M.Sc or equivalent Degree in Development Studies/Sociology/ Economics/ Agricultural Economics.

(j) Geology [Kolkata]: A good academic record with M. Sc in Geology /Applied Geology.

(k) Human Genetics [Kolkata]: A good academic record with Master’s Degree in Statistics.

(l) Library and Information Science [Bangalore]: A consistently good academic record with first or high second class in M. S (LIS) awarded by the Indian Statistical Institute or Associateship in Documentation and Information Science of the Indian Statistical Institute or NISCAIR/INSDOC or its equivalent Degree (such as Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from any University) with at least 55% marks in undergraduate programme.

Fellowships for these Programmes would be Rs. 14000/- per month for those with M.E/M.Tech or equivalent and Rs. 12000/- per month for others. A special fellowship of Rs. 15000/- per month is also available for outstanding candidates in each of (i) Statistics, (ii) Mathematics, (iii) Computer Science, (iv) Quantitative Economics and (v) Quality, Reliability and Operations Research. Selection of candidates is based on academic record, written tests and interviews conducted by the Institute.  The Selection Test will be conducted in India and abroad on 8th May, 2011.

Due consideration is given to SC/ST/OBC/Physically Challenged candidates for all programmes excluding Junior Research Fellowship programme. Detailed procedures for selection of the candidates who have been offered Junior Research Fellowships by the CSIR/ NBHM are available in the prospectus. Limited hostel facilities are available.

Those who are due to complete the qualifying examinations before 1st July 2011 may also apply.
