IIT Joint Entrance Examination

The IITs were set up by the Government of India as institutions of National importance and need no introduction. Bill Gates described IIT as a world class institute. Today, IITs are the first choice of the students who are aspiring for Engineering.

The IITs use the joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to select students for their undergraduate programmes and IIT-JEE is considered as one of the toughest Entrance Tests in the world. For less than 5,000 seats, nearly Three lash students took IIT-JEE this year. IIT-JEE is conducted for admission to B.Tech, integrated M.Tech, Co-operative Integrated M.Tech., B.Pharm. (Four years) and B.Arch.

Earlier, there were Seven IITs in India-Kanpur.Madras, New Delhi, Mumbai, Gwahati, Kharagpur, Roorkee(Integrated into IIT in 2001). Now, EIGHT more new IITs are added in the list (Bhubaneswer, Gandhi Nagar, Indore, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Punjab, Patna and Rajasthan).

The Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, the Institute of Teachnology, Banaras Hindu University, and Varanasi also follows IIT-JEE.However; women candidates are not given admission to B.Tech. In Mining or Mining Machinery Engineering. IIITM-Gwalior, IIIT-Allahabad, NIFFT-Ranchi and DG Shipping (TS Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata) also admit students from the JEE merit list for their undergraduate programmes.

The syllabus for the IIT-JEE is primarily based on the CBSE syllabus. There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. , Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Questions will be of objective type. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks. Candidates can opt for Question papers either in English or in Hindi. This option should be exercised while filling the application form and it cannot be changed at any later stage. Aptitude Tests for B.Des. Programmes will be conducted for those candidates who qualify in JEE and are desirous of joining these programmes.

Eligibility: Candidates who have passed (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination and secure at lest 60%markes in aggregate (55% marks for SC/ST and person with disability) in their respective Board Examination are eligible. A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years. IIT-JEE is a competition amongst the toppers so, it is advisable to start preparation from 9th class itself. Structured planning, determination and hard work are the essential ingredients to success.
