Biotechnology is the science of today and tomorrow. It has applications in all major service sectors of the society i.e. health, agriculture, industry, environment etc. Biotechnology as an application science has taken firm footing in countries abroad where a number of transgenic crops, genetically modified food and recombinant therapeutic molecules for human and animal health are available in the market. In its purest form, the term ‘biotechnology’ refers to the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment. Prehistoric biotechnologists did this as they used yeast cells to raise bread dough and to ferment alcoholic beverages, and bacterial cells to make cheese and yoghurts, and as they bred their strong, productive animals to make even stronger and more productive offspring. The scope of biotechnology in India is immense and has an estimated market of $2.5 billions, out of which 60 per cent is in the health sector, 10 per cent in agriculture and rest in bioinformatics, genomics and others. The emergence of newer pharma companies headed by technically qualified managers in the country as well as the impact of biotechnological products becoming abundant in countries abroad has changed the prospects of this science at home.This neo-pharma field is taking up challenges and investing in R&D in house as well as collaborating with national laboratories and centres of excellence to cut short the time to reap the benefits of this fast emerging area.
