The Division of Graduate Dental Studies (DGDS) offers residency training programmes in five clinical specialities, namely Endodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontology and Prosthodontics. These full-time three-year programmes, which culminate in the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS), consist of clinical, didactic and research components.
The DGDS has also expanded its scope and involvement in the professional life of the dentist by providing Continuing Dental Education seminars/ courses. The division also conducts a Basic Medical Science course to prepare candidates who sit for the Part 1 MDS Examination.
Entry requirements for the MDS Residency Training Programme:
Holder of a Bachelor degree in Dental Surgery (BDS or equivalent basic dental degree from a University recognised by the Board of the Faculty of Dentistry)
At least two years’ clinical experience in
full-time clinical practice after graduation (excluding internship).
International applicants are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS score. Only National University of Singapore (NUS) graduates and native English speakers from G7 countries are exempted. Please note that only candidates with TOEFL score of 580 and above (computer based score of 237 & above) or IELTS score of 6.5 and above will be considered.
A pass in the Part 1 Examination is not compulsory for purposes of application towards the MDS residency training programme. However, residents are required to pass the Part 1 examinations in their first year of the MDS Programme and will not be allowed to continue in the course if they fail to do so. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to take the Basic Medical Sciences course in preparation for the Part 1 MDS Examinations conducted in January annually.
Applicants who have taken and passed the membership examination by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh or the F.R.A.C.D.S (Part I) will be exempted from the Part 1MDS Examination, the results of which will be taken into due consideration in the shortlisting of applicants. However, a pass does not guarantee a place in the programme. Applicants from ASEAN countries may apply for the NUS Graduate Scholarship, which is applicable only for ASEAN Nationals.
