IGNOU Distance learning through 3G spectrum

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Asia's largest distance learning university - Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has signed a contract with Swedish telecommunication giant Ericsson to provide access to educational content using third generation (3G) mobile telephony.
This will be a pilot project for 1000 students, who are currently doing certificate course in computer science. This will be a milestone for India's distance learning process.
Students can download the study materials and attend the coaching classes through 3g platform. 3G will help to connect the students in remote areas.

"The concession on the 3G usages will be worked out with the governments and the telecommunication companies later. But we will charge a very minimal money, around Rs.25 or even less, for making distance education available through 3G applications," the vice chancellor of the university Mr. Pillai said.
