JEST- Joint Entrance Screening Test
Some of the reputed institutes in the country have come together to conduct a join Entrance Screening Test (JEST) for enrolment of students in Ph.D./Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D.programs in physics (including various inter-disciplinary reach areas in physics) and Theoretical Computer science
Minimum Qualifications &Selection procedures for Physics: M.Sc. in Physics or M.Sc/M.E/M.Tech. In related disciplines. Candidates with M.Sc in Mathematics will also be considered at IIA
Gradates with a B.E.or B.Tech. will also be considered at IIA, IUCAA, NCRA, JNCASR, RRI, SNBNCBS and IMSC.
At IPR candidates should have a Masters degree in Physics, Engineering Physics, etc. with at least 55% aggregate.
For Theoretical Computer Science: M.Sc/M.E/ M.Tech. In Computer Science or related disciplines, and should be interested in the mathematical aspect of computer science. B.Tech. Students are also eligible as per the list below.
Special Programmes:
.At HRI, candidates with a Bachelors degree will also be considered for the Integrated M.Sc. – Ph.D. programme in physics.
At IMSC, graduates with B.Sc./B.E/B.Tech.degree will also be considered for admission to the M.Sc.(by Research)programme in Theoretical Computer Science Physics, as part of an integrated Ph.D.programme in the disciplines.
At SNBNCBS, talented graduates with B.Sc (Physics) B.E/B.Tech. Degree will be considered for the Integrated M.Sc. PhD .programme
The examination: The Physics question paper will be a multiple – choice question paper only. It will contain questions of two levels of difficulty. The first level will have 25 easer questions carrying 1 mark each. The second level will have 25 difficult questions carrying 3 marks each. Therefore, the test questions will have a total of 50 questions with 25 from each level, adding to a total maximum mark of 100.40% questions will be from B.Sc. level land 60% questions will be from M.Sc. level
The theoretical Computer Science test will focus on the following areas: Analytical Reasoning and Deduction, Combinatorics, Graph Theory, principles of programming in each of these areas, familiarity with the basics (including the necessary simple mathematics) is assumed and will be tested. There will be questions of both varieties- some requiring short answers as will as some involving detailed problems solving.
JEST score forms an important component in the selection of candidates for the Ph.D. programme. Mere qualifying in JEST does not entitle will call a limited numbers of candidates for its further selection procedure depending on its requirements. All candidates selected after the interview will receive Research Fellow ship from the respective institutions
