Commercial Pilot: 
A high-flying career
Beyond the obvious glamour and good money, the career of a commercial pilot is full of responsibilities.
The most glamorous and exciting job in aviation is that of the commercial pilot. Preparation of the flight plan, analyzing meteorological report, checking the air worthiness of the aircraft, checking the fuel and cargo load, monitoring the automatic flying system and maneuvering navigational and communications systems are some of the duties of the pilot. Along with technical expertise, he should be physically and mentally alert and possess nerves of steel. In adverse circumstances, he should be a leader to his team and have the courage and confidence to make quick decisions
Courses
To become a commercial pilot in India, one must possess a student pilot License (PPL). The third step is the Commercial Pilot Licence.
Student Pilot Licence(SPL)
Eligibility: 10+2 with science and aged at lest 16years.
Admission: Eligible candidate should register at a flying club recognized by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India. Registration requires a medical certificate, security clearance and a bank guarantee.
Section Procedure:Cnadidates taking the SPL test have to appear in an oral examination on a fixed day every month. Candidates go through a medical test at Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), Subroto park, New Delhi and Institute of Aviation Medicine (IAM), Vimanpura, Bangalore, which are the final authorities for medical fitness. After clearing the medical test , the candidate is required to pass the pilot Aptitude Test.
Pilot Aptitude Test
The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRAU) is the premier flying institute in India. The Akademi offers opportunity to ascertain ones aptitude for flying through the pilot Aptitude Test. The Assessment report is issued immediately after the test.
Private Pilot License(PPL)
Eligibility: Plus Two (at lest 50% marks in physics and mathematics)and a medical fitness certificate from AFCME OR IAM. The age requirement is 17 years .
Admission: an entrance Test for a Private Pilot License course is taken on subjects like English, General Knowledge, Mathematics ,Physics and Chemistry. Application for this test have to be sent to the Director General of Civil Aviation, Safdarjang Airport, New Delhi 110003 in the month of April.
Training: After getting the SPL the candidate, accompanied by the flying instructor, proceeds for initial flying training. This is a dual flight, where the instructor or trainer accompanies the learner to tech him the practical aspect of flying. Then the candidates geets his first independent flight normally after about 15 hours of dual flying . This includes cross country  flying .A total of 60 hours of flying is needed of which 20 hours minimum should be solo and 5 hours cross country.
 Besides flying training, the candidates has to clear a theory examination. The subjects are: Air regulations, aviation, meteorology, air navigation, aircraft engines, seamanship.
Commercial Pilot License
A student can get the Cpl by doing his flying training for 190 hours to complete 250 hours of flying.
Eligibility: Plus Two (at least 50% marks in Physics and mathematics), PPL, and medical fitness certificate from AFCME OR IAM. The age requirement is 18 Years
Training: To obtain a commercial Pilot License (CPL) 250 hours of flying (including 60 hours for the PPL) is necessary. Beside that a candidate must undergo a Medical Fitness Test at New Delhi and a written examination which consists so air regulations, aviation meteorology, air navigation, technical, planning, and communications in the form of radio&wireless transmission.

Job Prospects : Trained pilots can seek employment  in government –owned or private airlines as commercial pilots, flying instructors, flights engineers, etc.
Glider Pilots Licences
The GPL entitles a person to pilot any gilder aircraft. In order to study for GPL, the candidate should be 16 years of age. He must pass on oral examination in air regulations, air navigation, aviation meteorology, aircraft and instruments. He should also have completed 10 hours of flight time including 3 hours of solo flying and have the experience of 75 take and landings in a glider in the 7-month period prior to the date of application for license. He also has to pass a flying test. The license is valid for 24/12 months depending on the age of the applicant.
Eligibility: Age: Not less than 18 years on the date of application
Educational Qualification:   Passed 10+2 with Physics and mathematics or its equivalent examination from a recognized Board/ University . Medical Fitness: Applicant shall produce on a prescribed proforma a certificate of physical fitness from either an approved medical practitioner or an approved medical Board after undergoing a medical
Technical Qualifications:  Applicant shall produce a valid Radio Telephone operators (Restricted or General) Certificate endorsed for Aeromobile Service issued or recognized by the Central Government under the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Rules, 1954;
Other Requirements: Applicant may be required to pass at the discretion of the Director- General, a test to establish his Knowledge of the current aeromobile radio-telephone operating practices and procedures, standards and recommended practices pertaining to air traffic control communication as promulgated by the Director-General from time to time;
Experience:  Applicant shall produce satisfactory evidence of having completed not less than two months of satisfactory experience as a Flight Radio Telephone Operator and obtained experience of at lest ten hours during the proceedings twelve months in a Aircraft equipped with radio, provide that an applicant who has not had the experience as required above may be granted a provisional licence for a period not exceeding one year in order to enable him to obtain the necessary experience, provided further that an applicant who is licensed flight crew will not be required to produce evidence experience.
Job Prospects
A person holding a Flight Radio Telephone Operators License is eligible to seek employment in companies/organizations engaged in the filed of Civil Aviation as an “ aeronautical Radio Communication Officer”

Private Helicopter Pilots Licence (PHPL)
PHPL entitles the holder to fly helicopters but not for remuneration. The applicant should be 17 years of age and has to pass a written examination in air regulation, air navigation aviation meteorology and aircraft and engines. He should have experience of minimum 40 hours of flight time including at least 15 hours solo flying and five hours of cross country during the 12 months prior to date of application. He also has to successfully complete a flying test. License is valid for either 24or12 months depending on the applicant.

Commercial Helicopter PilotLicence(CHPL)
The CHPL allows the holder to act as Pilot or co-pilot of any licensed helicopter. To qualify for CHPL, an applicant must be 18 years of age and possess a medical fitness certificate . He should pass the written examination in air regulation, air navigation , aviation meteorology, aircraft and engines and signals (practical). He should have completed 100 hours of flight time as pilot of a helicopter including specified hours of solo flying, cross country flying, instrument flying and night flying
