The Faculty of Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Baroda, traces its genesis to its 1881 avatar — the Baroda College — hailed as ‘the Oxford of West India.’ MSU continues to attract students from India and overseas, especially for its courses in Fine Arts.
The Faculty of Arts has introduced the choice-based credit system (CBCS) for its BA (Hons) course, as proposed by the National Knowledge Commission, UGC and Association of Indian Universities. This will allow students to select a variety of disciplines across semesters as opposed to standard subjects taught over the years. Completion of each discipline shall award credits and upon achieving the required credit score, the student can complete his/her BA (Hons) degree.
Nitin Vyas, dean, Faculty of Arts, MSU, says, “The faculty enables learners to choose from a wide range of disciplines with a measure of inter and multi-disciplinarity, and provide them with a chance for higher studies and individual choice in their fields of interest and aptitude.”
The flexibility that the new system allows would be useful for students. Says Sunita Mohan, applying to first year: “I can study with the flexibility of choosing foundation and core courses that are crucial from a career perspective as well as allied and extension courses that develop social orientation and soft skills.” While her friend Ritesh Sejwani says, “We can get credits for nurturing our passions in activities like dramatics, campus cleaning, creative writing, music, etc.”
The minimum eligibility for admission into the BA programme is class XII with 45% marks and English as a subject. New disciplines under foundation courses for BA (Hons) include Hindi for the media, Gujarati for the media, Foreign Languages (Arabic, French, German, Persian and Russian), course on computer concepts-I, hotel management and catering services, among others.
