The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore has invited applications for admission to Ph.D. and the integrated M.Tech-Ph.D. (Tech.) programmes. IIA is devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related areas of physics. The main campus is located in Koramangala, Bangalore.
Additionally, the institute also has various field centres, including the Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST) at Hosakote, Bangalore, and the observing facilities at Gauribidanur, Hanle, Kavalur and Kodaikanal
Eligibility
This is a full-time research programme where in the students work towards their Ph.D. degree under the supervision of an IIA faculty. Students may join the programme in either the first semester beginning in August or the second semester beginning in January.
IIA conducts the Integrated M.Tech- Ph.D (Tech.) programme in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta (CU). The Degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta.
The candidates can apply if: (a)he/she qualified for JRF in the NET/CSIR/UGC exam, or, (b) scored 96 percentile or above in the JEST 2017, or, (c) scored 97 percentile or above in GATE. Candidates applying for the IIA-Ph.D programme based on their GATE / JEST score must have qualified in the PHYSICS paper of GATE / JEST. Admission criteria also requires that the candidate to have scored aggregate of 55% marks or above throughout his/her academic career. Candidates who obtained their last degree (qualifying degree) before 2013 are not eligible to apply.
Candidates are selected based on an interview at the IIA, Bangalore campus. Original documents of all academic records (mark sheets etc.) must be produced during the interview. If any information is found to have been falsified in the online application, it will lead to the automatic and immediate disqualification of the candidate.

Candidate are required to provide the names and contact details of two referees who are familiar with his/her academic abilities and who can objectively assess his/her suitability for a research career. The referees will be contacted to fill in and submit the online confidential assessment forms only for those candidates who are selected to appear for interview. Candidates may inform their referees accordingly. Last date to apply online is 24 April 2017. </
